About Obamacare in Maryland

In Maryland, the Health Insurance Marketplace program is known as Maryland Health Connection. The program enables you to compare, select and purchase a health plan that adapts to your family’s needs as well as your budget. When applying for Maryland Health Connection, you can be eligible for financial assistance that will help you cover the costs of private insurance. You can also qualify for Medicaid or Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) public coverage. The enrollment period for 2014 has ended, but you can enroll for 2015 coverage starting on November 15, 2014.

On the other hand, Medicaid enrollment is open year round or you can also verify if you qualify for Maryland Health Connection special enrollment period. Either way, you will be able to find an affordable health plan for you and your family. For more information regarding Maryland Health Connection, go to: http://marylandhealthconnection.gov/.

Individual & Family Coverage

Beginning in 2014, most people will be required to have health coverage or they will be subject to a fine. If you already have Medicaid or Medicare, you are considered covered. If you decide to purchase your health insurance through Maryland Health Connection, you will receive essential health benefits. Plans will cover doctor appointments, emergency care, hospitalization, laboratory tests, mental health care, maternity care, pediatric care and prescription medications, amongst others.

Preventative care is also provided by all Maryland Health Connection plans. Preventative benefits include flu shots, vaccinations, cancer screening and birth control. Maryland Health Connection offers more than 80 medical and dental plans; you can review and compare plans to decide which one provides the best coverage according to your needs.

Small Businesses

Maryland small business owners can acquire health insurance for their employees through the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP). These insurance plans allows you to control the coverage level you want to provide for your employees – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum – as well as the portion of the premium you pay. Each coverage level indicates what percentage of your employee’s medical expenses a plan will cover. The healthcare plans are offered by private insurance providers that have been previously approved by the state of Maryland.

You can compare the available SHOP plans to determine the benefits, out-of pocket costs and premiums associated with each one. Some businesses will also qualify for tax credits when getting a plan through Maryland Health Connection. Enrollment for Maryland small business began in April 2014.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Maryland Health Connection plans guarantee that your insurance provider is not able to deny you coverage based on a pre-existing condition. Pre-existing medical conditions include chronic illnesses, disabilities and pregnancy. Insurance companies cannot charge you higher premiums or copayments due to any of these pre-existing health conditions. However, deductibles and coinsurances will still be applicable when receiving treatment for a pre-existing condition, the same way it is applied for treatment of new conditions. Keep in mind that grandfathered plans don’t have to cover pre-existing conditions, but you can choose to switch to a Maryland Health Connection plan that does.
