About Obamacare in Nevada
Obamacare is the popular name given to the Affordable Care Act, a law created to help people get affordable health insurance under fair conditions. Almost 9 million Americans already enjoy the benefits and protections of Obamacare. There is no specific requirement to get coverage under the new legislation. You only have to be lawfully present in the United States to enroll in a plan under the Affordable Care Act.
Obamacare also created an online exchange, called the Marketplace, where you can search for a convenient plan for yourself, your family or your business. The state of Nevada has its own marketplace called Nevada Health Link accessible at: www.nevadahealthlink.com. On this website you will be able to compare plans, check for eligibility, get assistance and enroll in a health insurance plan.
Individual & Family Coverage
Individuals and families have an Open Enrollment Period. The next one will be from November 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015. During this time you can visit www.nevadahealthlink.com and enroll in a plan. If you missed your enrollment period you can still qualify if you had a major life event such as a death in the family, the birth of a baby, marriage, or divorce, among others. You can also qualify if your current insurance is expiring. If you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, then you can look into getting Medicaid.
Obamacare offers four types of plans, based on the prices they charge for premiums and copays. These plans are named: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. All the plans offer the same basic coverage. The variations in prices were set in place to help people with different healthcare needs, but have nothing to do with the quality of care you get.
With a plan purchased through Nevada Health Link, you will be covered for all the basics: hospital stays, visits to the doctor, trips to the emergency room, prescription drugs, lab tests, preventive services, and medical equipment. You also get mental health treatment and substance abuse programs, as well as healthcare related to the birth of a baby.
Small business owners can also take advantage of all the benefits from the Affordable Care Act through the Nevada Health Link’s SHOP (Small Business Health Options Program). This program is available for businesses headquartered or located in Nevada that employ 50 or less full-time equivalent employees. You can shop for plans at: www.nevadahealthlink.com.
Your business can qualify for tax credits if it has less than 25 full-time equivalent employees, pay average annual wages below $50,000 per each full-time employee, and contributes at least 50 percent to each employee’s health insurance.
With the Obamacare reform, no company can deny you health insurance, even if you have a past chronic condition such as diabetes or cancer. All insurance companies have to take care of your illness or injury and can’t limit your benefits.
Grandfathered plans, the ones that you purchase yourself, are not subject to this rule. If you wish to switch to a plan under the Affordable Care Act, you can do so at the end of your current insurance period, or during the Open Enrollment Period which will start on November 15.
