About Obamacare in Washington

The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, is a federal program established to provide affordable health care coverage under fair conditions to all Americans. Obamacare also created a Marketplace where individuals, families and businesses can search and compare insurance plans.

Washington has its own exchange at: With the WA Health Plan Finder, you will be able to get the best plan according to your healthcare needs. You can also get tax cuts based on your household income. Most people qualify to get help paying their premium costs.

Other programs, such as Medicaid, also had their benefits extended by the Affordable Care Act.

Individual & Family Coverage

You can get a plan for yourself or your family during every Open Enrollment Period. The next one is from November 15, 2014, to February 15, 2014. If you missed the last enrollment period you could still qualify to get coverage through WA Obamacare if you had a major life event such as getting married, divorced, had a baby, or a death in the family, and also if your current coverage expired.

There are four basic plans to choose from: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. All of them offer the same basic coverage and only vary their costs for premiums and copays. Bronze plans, for example, have lower monthly premiums, but higher out-of-pocket expenses. Platinum plans, on the other hand, offer you higher premiums, but lower copays. You should choose your plan based on how much you expect to be using it throughout the year.

Each plan will cover you for inpatient and outpatient care, trips to the Emergency Room, lab tests, prescription drugs, preventive services, medical equipment, care before and after a baby is born, even expenses derived from mental health or substance abuse treatments.

You can enroll directly at You can also apply for Washington Apple Health (Medicaid) year-round or also if you are an enrolled member of a federally-recognized Tribe or Alaska Native Corporation.

Your business qualifies if it has less than 25 full-time employees or its equivalent, and is located in Clark or Cowlitz counties. More counties are expected to be added by 2015. You can enroll year-round at , or you can find a broker to help you with the process.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Obamacare in Washington offers health insurance even if you are sick or have an injury or pre-existing condition. As long as you get your plan through during your Open or Special Enrollment Period you have the right to receive coverage.

Grandfathered plans are the only exception to this rule. If you own one of these plans, your coverage can be denied or suspended due to pre-existing conditions. If you wish to switch to a plan covered by WA Obamacare, you can do so during the next enrollment period starting November 15, or when your insurance year expires.
